Simulations of future particle accelerators: issues and mitigations

The ever increasing demands placed upon machine performance have resulted in the need for more comprehensive particle accelerator modeling. Computer simulations are key to success of accelerators. Many aspects accelerators rely on computer modeling at some point, sometimes requiring complex simulation tools and massively parallel supercomputing. Examples include beams extreme intensities densities (toward quantum degeneracy limit), with ultra-fine control (down level individual particles). In future, adaptively tuned models might also be relied provide beam measurements beyond resolution existing diagnostics. Much time effort has been put into creating software tools, which highly successful. However, there shortcomings such as general inability easily modified meet changing needs. this paper possible mitigating strategies discussed issues faced by community it endeavors produce better tools. This includes lack coordination between code developers, standards make codes portable and/or reusable, documentation, among others.
